This Chesapeake dog team running in a competitive race was a first for the breed.
Dogs running lead (Right lead Wildwood’s Flicka) a FLD CH. Tiger’s Cub daughter (Left lead Silverdart’s Salome)
Swing dogs Right, Wildwood’s Brava - Left, Wildwood’s Ribbon
Team dogs Right, Wildwood’s Banner W.D. - Left, Ch. Wildwood’s Midnight Sundance W.D.
Wheel dogs Left, Wildwood’s Sailor Bouy another FLD CH Tiger’s Cub Offspring - Right, Silverdart’s Upstart.
All these dogs I started as adults, they were all good working retrievers first. I trained and ran these dogs with very little help and I think it shows the versatility of the breed.
That same year I received a request for movie footage of this team from the state of Maryland as they were making a documentary about the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, their state dog. Movie footage was taken along the same race trail and with the same dog team as described above and myself. They were clocked at 25 miles an hour.
This footage was used in the film “Dog of the Chesapeake”. I was able to see a copy some time after it was made but I’m currently looking for a copy to keep. I am planning on putting another Chesapeake team together and will get some more pictures of them up as soon as I can. It is only now that I have enough dogs to do so.
This is great winter time exercise and fun for dogs and people.
